Simon Willison: "If you just want a light-weight format for moving data around, JSON fits the bill admirably." XML-RPC got killed (essentially) by the perception that SOAP was the Real Thing To Come; that episode should certainly find its way into the Official Handbook on Vaporware, Uncertainty and Doubt in due time. So, to recap, what does JSON lack that XML-RPC has? A specified date datatype (pretty useful in those days when almost everything has some kind of temporal affinity), a binary data type (probably should be handled out-of-band anyway) and booleans (mkay). JSON, on the other hand, has nulls (killer feature). Error codes are not a data model concern and are rightly handled by JSON-RPC (spec). Gotta dig regarding charset issues. "IT'S NOT EVEN XML!" — Instant classic. |
