Baeza-Yates et al.: Challenges in Distributed Information Retrieval

"[...] in 2010, being conservative, we would need clusters of 50,000 computers and at least 1.5 million computers, which is unreasonable."

Unreasonable? Some might disagree ...

Fortunately, Greg Linden already culled some gems from the paper. In Scrivener's ReadMe: "I had dabbled in programming for years, and I wanted this tool so much that I designed it, spent a year teaching myself how to program using the Cocoa frameworks [...] and then put it all together. And then it went through a cycle of beta-testing and I tore it all apart again [...] and rebuilt it [...]. And here it is." [ Ø G • ]Jens Alfke: "I spent five years as a raving Java fanboy, but I gave up after optimizing AWT, implementing drag and drop, and trying to make 1,200 pages of crappy APIs do the right thing on the Mac. Then I took a one-week Cocoa training course, and wrote the first prototype of [create iChat]."
