It's official: Team BellKor KorBell (from [could you guess it?] AT&T Labs) is the first Netflix Prize* "progress prize" winner (prizemaster announcement).

Their winning entry was a combination of a whopping 107 (!) individual results, which impressively demonstrates the effectiveness of ensemble methods (and, somewhat less enthusiasm-inducingly, the amount of work required ...).

Addendum: Yehuda Koren announces an answer: "How many results are really needed?"

We dabbled along back in the beginning of the year; it was tremendously educational (and we got some fine Collaborative Filtering code out of it). What we didn't get, however, was close to the top positions; but then, in that, we're in good company.

* In BellKor's words, one "heck of a competition". Indeed!In Wochenendsnähe von wegen von Foerster in Wien. Bei abendlicher Co-Trinklust: Telefonnummer findet sich sicher irgendwo.*

* Z.B. hier.
