'Noether's single most important paper, "Theory of Ideals in Rings," was published in 1921. In it she thought only in concepts, comparing and contrasting them in grand and abstract schemes. Formulas, numbers, physical examples, and computations fade away. It is as if she were describing and comparing the characteristics of buildings - tallness, solidity, usefulness, size - without ever mentioning buildings themselves. Numbers and formulas actually seemed to hinder her understanding of mathematical laws and proofs.'
