"The Monet database system is the first kernel relying fully on binary (i.e. 2-column) relational tables the prime storage scheme for relational and object-oriented datamodels. The most common case of using these binary tables is to put database values in the right column and system generated object-identifiers (OIDs) in the left. Monet adds special support for densly ascending OIDs (e.g. 0,1,2,..) in the form of virtual-OIDs (VOIDs), so at the physical level Monet's binary tables are almost always unary tables, implemented as arrays, such that lookup-by-OID is as simple/cheap as indexing an array."
