Founded in 1977 by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, [create Ed Oates] and Bruce Scott as [create System Development Laboratories] to develop relational database software for the US government. After a first name change to Relational Software the company finally settled on Oracle as company name in 1982. Oracle V2 (released in 1979, Oracle V1 never was) was the company's first commercial SQL database. Oracle V3 (1983) was the first portable database to run on PCs, mainframes and minicomputers. In 1986, Oracle goes public and in 1987 it becomes the largest DBMS software company in the world.
