The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania is responsible for a lot of the early work in the application of computers to business problems. In the early 1970s Donald Carrol moved from MIT to Wharton as Dean, following James C. Emery, E. G. Hurst, Christopher Sprage and others. David Ness and several others followed Carrol, making Wharton an `outpost' of the Management Information Systems group at MIT's Sloan School, where Project MAC had lead to some of the earliest `decision support' activity. At Wharton, one of Carrol's first important projects was to fund the construction of the Wharton Computer Center, and to begin to use the DEC10 to support management information and decision activities. The Office Automation Project, the DAISY Project and several other research efforts dominated developments in this area at Wharton up well into the 1980s. |
