Lisp Porn: www.lemonodor.com/archives/000028.html (inkl. [create SK8]-Screenshots!)Good news from Cameron Pope of Six Degrees fame-to-come: "XML-RPC lets us decouple our user interface from our data manipulation so we can share that code, but we can make the Mac app a Cocoa application and use MFC for Windows - we don't have to compromise the user experience in order to write a cross-platform application. XML-RPC has improved the quality of our application immensely. We can write scripts that test the corners of our application, and we can put that in our nightly build process. Most importantly, XML-RPC will let our users do things with our app that we aren't smart enough to imagine. (Geez, I'm starting to sound like a freakin' testimonial!)"Jon Udell: "I don't try to create a topic hierarchy. Having wrestled with questions such as whether XML should be a subcategory of Web Development, or vice versa, I've concluded that this way lies madness. My goal now is simply to assign resources to a flat list of topics--from 15 to, at most, 40 of them, depending on the data set. The resulting topic map isn't fancy, but it chunks the data set usefully, it's easy to create, and it's easy to maintain." — And all of this comes free with Wikis (well, sorta).

Neues vom anderen Ende des Spektrums?

"WonderTools? A comparative study of ontological engineering tools."ArsDigita co-founder Eve Andersson: "The rise and fall of ArsDigita and lessons from the world of venture capital" — eveander.com/arsdigita-historyWeitere Sensationen via rinner.st: "Apple/Genentech BLAST is up to five times faster than the standard BLAST implementation, the popular bioinformatics tool from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). [...] The PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine [...] provides an incredibly productive platform for computational science. The ability of the Velocity Engine to prefetch data and perform multiple floating-point operations per clock cycle enables it to easily analyze the massive amounts of information coming from genome, protein and DNA sequencing projects. The newly released dual 1-GHz Power Mac G4, delivering an amazing 15 gigaflops, gives life scientists a powerful yet easy-to-use turnkey solution." — Now I only wonder when K will be available for MacOS X?

The Eve Andersson piece strikes me as startlingly naive. From her description I find no clear model of what $40 million was supposed to do, and therfore it doesn't surpise me at all that everyone was likely to be very disappointed. Beating on venture capitalists may relieve frustration, but if you take a huge pile of money from someone, you shouldn't be surprised if they have some optinions about how it should be spent.

"[W]e started looking in earnest for venture capital in order to accelerate growth and to allow ourselves the luxury of taking developers off of paying client projects so they could work full-time on our core product, the ArsDigita Community System (ACS)."

Venture Capital instead of licensing revenue?
