| David Ness 7989 days AGO I'm curious about the Sony thing that Eberhard (and others) have mentioned. As usual, I don't quite get it. While wireless makes some sense to me between things like a camera and a computer, and while I would love to have a wireless offload from a Camera or a GPS to a 20Gb size disk, I don't think I'd have much other use for this kind of device unless it's _real_ cheap. I'd expect to get a full computer with a 20gb disk and a small, but real, screen for $600 -> $800 and the prices I've seen on this Sony thing put it at Y70,000 or so---so the economics just don't add up to me. |
| chris 7989 days AGO The bummer is that it has a 20 GB disk only, as Stephan mentions. For me to buy a device like that, I'd want it to have - for all practical purposes - unlimited bytesupply (~ 100 GB for me personally at the moment - that should be enough for two or three years at least, unless of course the sudden need to carry my videotheque around with me arises).
I guess 100 GB devices will come sooner rather than later. April? May? |
| Eberhard Lutz 7989 days AGO The thing is that Sony's Clié PDA now have 2MPixel cameras built in, so, where to store/share the data? The separation of the disk from the "terminal" reminds me of car stereos, where you also have a CD juke box in the trunk separated from the panel. Same with ad-hoc networks, PDAs can stay as they are, and don't have to be eveolved into full-blown "shrinked PCs". The server also is cheaper than a Clié NZ90 handheld, by the way. |
| David Ness 7989 days AGO To Eberhard's point, I have had a Canon 3.3megapixel camera and an iPAQ 36xx for a couple of years now. And my 1GB CF disk serves for storing up to about 1000 pix without any external power. And it's trivial to move around in either a CF or PCMCIA slot. Admittedly 1Gb is no 20Gb, but for the camera/pda/compuer bit it not only works fine, it has been around _forever_. That's why there seems to be less here to me than meets the eye. I guess what I don't get is the value of the `wireless' thing, in my situations it's _always_ easy to run a one meter RJ45 cable if I need to `hook up to a net'... |
