Monsieur earl hat den Weg gen Osten wieder eingeschlagen, nicht aber ohne zuvor in den synerge-Labs eine grandiose Lecture zum Thema Netzwerkuntiefen gehalten zu haben. Leider verfügt ebendiese Lablocation über nur bedingt zu Begeisterung hinreissende Bandbreitenvorkommnisse, und somit wird der nonrealpräsente Rest der Welt beispielsweise mit der MIT World vorlieb nehmen müssen. Es könnte wahrscheinlich schlimmer sein.

Amazing: 'Sabre Holdings has migrated its Air Shopping products from a mainframe platform to a combination of HP NonStop servers and a cluster of 45 HP rx5670 servers with MySQL running on the 64-bit Intel Itanium 2 processor with the Linux operating system. Over 100 MySQL database tables are replicated on a 7 X 24 basis through GoldenGate's data synchronization software. The total amount of data held in the clustered MySQL databases is approximately 75 gigabytes. — "We benchmarked our application on several databases, including open source, commercial and a specialized in-memory relational database, and MySQL was the best performing database," said Alan Walker, vice president of Sabre Labs.' — Spricht nicht unbedingt für die "specialized in-memory relational database" ...

Apropos MySQL und High Performance: Vor nicht allzulanger Zeit hat MySQL AB die schwedische Firma Alzato übernommen, ein Ericsson-Spinoff, das für die (Weiter-)Entwicklung des für Telco-übliche Szenarios entworfenen Produkts NDB Cluster verantwortlich zeichnete. Die sich abzeichnende Strategie scheint nicht schlecht: MySQL als Marke dient als das eine trojanische Marktbearbeitungs-Zugpferd, im Hintergrund übernehmen immer mehr InnoDB (bread & butter), SAP DB (enterprise applications) und NDB (high performance) mit einem jeweils einigermassen klar umreissbaren Einsatzprofil die Mühen des Datenbankdaseins.

Code und seine Unfassbarkeit ... Unter anderem dadurch motiviert sind unsere Lieblingsenvironments im Allgemeinen wohl solche, die einigermassen direktes Interagieren mit codierten Strukturen erlauben — ob es nun der Frontier'sche Outliner ist oder ein REPL in Lisp/APL'scher Manier (oder gar das vielleicht etwas gebräuchlichere Excel-Sheet ;-).

Ich bin schon gespannt, auf welche Art & Weise Tom Fürstners Turtles das Licht des Webs erblicken werden ...
