Re: Taligent. You can thank Gary Ashcavai for the book design. He's quite talented. As far as other legacies.... A big chunk of Java's I18N stuff came from Taligent, resource bundles, etc. The assorted Symbian APIs acknowledge a great deal of Taligent influence too. More tangentially, Taligent brought a bunch of the great object-oriented programming minds together (Erich Gamma, et al), let them work together for a few years and then released them into the wild again.... How to measure that?

Seriously, as important as Taligent's influence may have been for lots of things we use today, how much of the company's technology has been actually released in non-demo/non-proof-of-concept form? 0.5%? I guess that's the point Don Box is trying to make: Contact with reality is extremely important, and that implies getting things out.
