| jurijmlotman 6505 days AGO [off topic] could you sometimes put together the best 10 papers on computing / programming that could be meaningful to non-programmers and non-geeks? like InteractionWithComputers linked below, or the great GrowingALanguage. and similar question: if one wanted to learn some programming language, just to get a feel of it, as part of the New Liberal Arts, what would s/he have to learn? and how to proceed? |
| mf 6479 days AGO I would be interested in such a list put together by Mr. L as well.
Two-cultures-bridging stuff that I think matters includes Richard Gabriel (cf. interview here and, of course, Donald Knuth's literate programming paradigm (cf. the original 1983 paper (pdf), more on wikipedia).
Edit: that Gabriel idea of an MFA in Software seems to have peaked around 2002/2003, and there seems to have been some interest by the UIUC, but I can't find anything more recent on it.
Edit (2007-03-28): update re MFA in software Just got a google alert that led me to some more factoids. A one-week pilot program with some 15 students ran at UIUC in August 2004. Instructors: Richard Gabriel, Brian Marick and Ralph Johnson. There's also a 7-minute interview out there with Avi Bryant, who participated (audio stream here). |
