jolby unearthed some pointers into the archive of Jack Crenshaw's* Programmer's Toolbox columns. Embedded.com's site search engine only seems to cover post-2001 articles; one day, it might be worthwhile to unbury & re-index all columns, for now a great-looking series on interpreters must suffice:

'I arranged to have a team of folks come to Honeywell to give us a lecture and demo. The team included Forth Inc.'s future CEO, the redoubtable Elizabeth "Liz" Rather. They made the language sound great, but I must admit, it was difficult to tell just exactly what they were saying. I recall specifically asking Rather "What exactly is [create Forth]? Is it an interpreter, a programming language, an assembler, an operating system, or what?"

'Her answer: "Yes."'
